Chew Gum to Help Reduce Tooth Decay

Posted .

Did you know that chewing gum can help prevent cavities? You heard us right. Studies have shown that chewing gum for about 20 minutes after meals can help prevent tooth decay. Dr. Michael Danner and our team are happy to give you some insights to chewing gum.

The reason why chewing gum can help your teeth is that it increases the flow of saliva. The act of chewing is a great way to stimulate the flow of saliva. The flow of saliva in the mouth helps clean the mouth of food particles. In addition, saliva can neutralize cavity-causing acids in the mouth.

In order to gain the full benefits of chewing gum, make sure that you choose a sugar-free variety. Although gum with sugar will still promote saliva flow, the sugars are used by plaque to produce cavity-causing acids.

Look for the ADA Seal when choosing chewing gum. This ensures that the gum is sugarless and that the sweeteners do not cause tooth decay.

Never let chewing sugar-free gum replace your oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day.
