Are you expecting a new little baby? This little one is sure to bring some big changes in your life, but did you know that pregnancy can also affect your dental health? The changes in your hormones can increase your risk for certain issues like gum disease and small round bumps that are called pregnancy tumors.
Gum Disease
Your changing hormones can cause your gums to swell, which could ultimately lead to a condition called pregnancy gingivitis. If your gums seem tender, or bleed easily, you’ve likely developed pregnancy gingivitis and our dentist may recommend that you have more frequent professional cleanings until your baby is born.
At home, you can continue your dental hygiene routine by using a soft-bristled toothbrush twice a day to help prevent plaque buildup. Flossing once a day, in addition to brushing, can also help prevent gingivitis as it can reach the spaces between teeth that brushes can’t reach.
Pregnancy Tumors
Despite their scary name, pregnancy tumors are not malignant. They can look like small raspberries between your teeth and may show up during the second trimester. If they are uncomfortable, Dr. Michael Danner could possibly remove them, but they usually disappear after the birth of your baby.
If you have any other questions or concerns about your dental health during pregnancy, or would like to schedule an appointment, please call Danner Family Dentistry at 309-346-2145 today. We would be happy to help you and your growing family in Pekin, Illinois, with their smiles.
